December e-news

CB eNews may now be seen online at: http://www.clevelandbaye-news.co.uk.

I have been advised that the Baywatch will be coming out soon.  Jane Scott will be taking over as Editor again (she was editor several years ago) and the first issue should be out prior to the Annual Meeting.   If you have not received it yet, keep an eye on your mailbox as its arrival should be imminent!  Because of this, eNews will not always run updates on CBHSNA committee activities.  If a committee wants or needs information included in eNews, then it will certainly be included.  However, since official notices and committee reports properly belong in Baywatch, that’s where you should look for them.  Should anything happen to prevent the Baywatch from coming out, eNews will be there to help pick up the slack.  ENews will continue to run news from around the globe should anyone care to submit the same.

Now, off to Florida for the CHBSNA’s Annual General Meeting!

DNA News:   Just a reminder that Gabrielle will be at the AGM.  She’ll have blank DNA forms and other items there should anyone care to bring purebred DNA hair samples with them!

CB International Expo Committee News:   The committee is considering an international photo contest!  Following the success of the UK competition, a steering group has come together to expand the competition to all worldwide.  There are representatives on the group from all three societies who are working on the categories and the format. Presently, the committee is trying to create categories which present the widest opportunity for all to enter from the smallest child to the International competitor. Ideas are welcome.  The purpose is to foster participation between the widely-dispersed CB community and to generate photographs that can be used to promote the Cleveland Bay world wide at Expos Shows and indeed anywhere that a CB can be promoted.  Plans for the competition will be finalized over the next few weeks. It will then be posted in e-news on the e-news site and distributed to the Societies /magazines and to websites that support Cleveland Bays.  Watch this space for more information or check the website at www.clevelandbaye-news.co.uk and click on “CBEIC.”.  If you have ideas and/or would like to assist the committee, please contact Kate Telford kt@pembridgestud.com

International CB Sporthorse Register (formerly “Lost CBs”):  The databases have been completed (well, we hope so) on the laptop and will be available for viewing at the AGM.  There will also be blank ICBSR enrollment forms available at the Florida AGM.

PA News:  DO NOT FORGET that logbooks are due to the pointskeeper by 15 December, with applicable score sheets, vet cards, and/or copies of your horse’s passport (this passport deadline applies to new members only).  All logbooks should be returned, whether you were able to compete this year or not.  Constructive criticism is always welcome.  ALSO: If traveling with them would not be too inconvenient, past PA program winners attending the AGM are asked to bring their ribbons/awards with them for a sort of “show and tell” session after the Meeting.

PR News:   The committee plans to host an informal “jam session” in the conference meeting after the Annual Meeting.  All interested persons are invited.  Laptop computers will be set up for viewing with video footage of past events, copies of advertising, etc.

Cleveland Bays will be featured at a Breed display/expo at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie Texas on January 31st, hosted by the Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau.  Remember, they were instrumental in the success of the 2005 Texas AGM.   The GCVB sought out us out based on the rapport created during planning of the Texas AGM.  Lone Star Park is a class 1 race track and was site of the 2005 Breeder’s Cup races.   For more information, contact Gabrielle (gaby@ggzoo.net).

Cleveland Bay breed will be featured in the March 2007 issue of the United States Dressage Federation’s “Dressage Connection” magazine.  Watch for the write-up and contact Gabrielle Gordon (gaby@ggzoo.net).

The Cleveland Bay Studbook (vol. XXXVII) was released in October.  The price is £15.00 for a “paperback” copy.  For more information, please contact the CBHS office..

The Cleveland Bay Horse Society has created a working group to look into the restructuring of the Society. A presentation at their October AGM of the paper entitled 'Forging the Future' detailed a draft structure that could include a Chief Officer an Executive Board, Council members - to be reduced to 15 - and Committees sharing specific responsibilities. A further detailed consultation paper will be produced and regional meetings arranged enabling membership discussion.

“Expo binders” are still under construction. Members of PR/Expo have created an electronic stallion binder, but need additional information for it.  Send any breeder information or any “horses for sale” information to Donna McDowell at donnacmac56@earthlink.net . She will be placing the pages in a normal three ring binder.  They can be made available electronically.

A box of PR materials for expos and similar events has been created. Performance pictures are needed.  Please contact the PR committee for more information.

Several PR committee members are working to create a CBHSNA promotional video and CB footage is needed.  Please contact the PR committee if you have video or pictures for this project

“Action shots” are needed for society advertising.  If you have suitable action photos of your CB, please contact Coralie Nairn at cl_chablis@hotmail.com

Did you hear…?

Ted White and Carolina Knock Out (“Carrie”) of Louisiana just got back from the USDF Region 9 Championships in Houston.  Ted states that he and Carrie “managed to sneak in with a 6th place in the 2d level championship despite the fact it was only the 6th 2d level test we'd ever ridden!  We also received the Dover Medal for the open show (awarded to the highest scoring adult amateur at 2d level).  As far as I can tell, she was the only CB at the show.”  Congratulations to them both!

This is the height of hunting season in the United States.  At least ten (10) pure and partbred Cleveland Bays are actively foxhunting this year in the US.  Be sure to watch for them in Chronicle of the Horse and on foxhunting websites. Several foxhunters will be present at the AGM.  If you’ve ever been curious about the sport of foxhunting, but were afraid to ask, then look for Marilyn, Donna, Gabrielle, or Milinda.  Of course, there may be other hunters present so just ask around.

Announcements from the Society President to the membership:

From 10/17/2006

Dear CBHSNA Members:

I am writing on behalf of your Board of Directors.  In consideration of the changes proposed to the bylaws by the Bylaws Committee, members of the Board of Directors have expressed a need for more time for review.  The bylaws are the instrument containing our own basic rules relating to our Society as an organization rather than the parliamentary procedure that we follow.  The rules we establish for our Society should be well thought out, they should include all rules that the society considers so important that they cannot be changed without a great deal of consideration from all involved.  In light of the importance of this document, I have granted the Board more time for review.  After the Board feels they have a strong, functional document, it will be sent to the membership for their review and consideration.  Thank you for your patience concerning this important matter.

Sincerely yours,

BJ Field

President CBHSNA.

From 10/19/2006

Members of CBHSNA

I have received a very nice email from the new President of CBHS, Colin Green. In his email he states "I hope that we can work successfully together to strengthen and develop the relationship between our two societies".

In my response to Colin, I expressed on behalf of CBHSNA our pleasure to be able to work with him as President and the rest of the members of CBHS.  I stated that our goal is the same, to increase the number of Cleveland Bay horses without loosing the standard of quality in the breed that has made them such wonderful versatile horses.  With this in mind, I said we will openly accept the guidance and assistance that he so generously offered our Society. I stated I also feel we can continue to grow our relationship with CBHS and work in unison to support our breed. All help to address any concerns we may have and to make a good working relationship is greatly appreciated.

Best,

BJ

0ctober 2006 e-news

"CB eNews"

Introduction

Welcome to the inaugural edition of the CB eNews!  Many members have expressed concern about lack of timely communication within the Society.  This newsletter will advise CBHSNA members of news and events (both recent and upcoming) which may be of interest.  Presently, we plan to send this out monthly unless breaking news dictates otherwise.  Multiple contributors provide to you information about what they’ve been doing, what they plan to do, and help encourage discourse between Society members and non-member CB aficionados.

Although this is not an “official” publication of the CBHSNA the following committees have contributed to this edition of CB eNews:  Bylaws Committee, DNA Committee, International Expo Group, Lost CBs committee, the PA committee, PR Committee, and the Rules and Regulations Committee.  We hope to include in each issue:  committee updates, recent awards won, people and horses to watch, venues where CBs will be present, educational opportunities, etc.  There will also be “Snippets” of information about accomplishments of members and a calendar showing upcoming events and deadlines.  This does not replace the Baywatch or the CBHSNA website for “official” notices.  This is just a bit of extra news for members to tide you over between issues of the Baywatch.

We would like feedback from members.  What do you like about this eNews?  What do you dislike?  Would you like to see additional items or make suggestions?  If you have constructive criticism, please email your comments to CB.eNews@yahoo.com.  If you do not want to receive CB eNews, please send an email to that same address, type “remove” in the subject line and you will be removed from the mailing list.  Likewise, not everyone has email.  This may be faxed to them or mailed via “snail mail.”  If those persons decide to opt out, they may call 903.626.7481 and leave a message to that effect.  No one’s feelings will be hurt if you decide to ‘opt out.’

Thanks and we hope you enjoy the updates.

Committee updates

In the interest of fairness, participating committees are listed in alphabetical order

Bylaws Committee:  After a long and arduous period working on a new set of bylaws, the bylaw committee has now sent the final draft to the BOD.  The BOD will take a short period of time to review and then it will be sent to the membership.  Because the present Bylaws dictate the timetable for amendment/revision of Bylaws, this draft will need to go into the mail soon so no member will have to wait long in order to see the draft.  Please read it carefully – it is longer than the previous document because it is more detailed.

DNA Committee:  Dr. Gus Cothran, equine geneticist extraordinaire and recent addition to Texas A&M University, has announced that he now has enough DNA to begin an initial analysis but more samples are needed (you can never have too many)!  Please visit the CBHSNA website at http://www.clevelandbay.org for the submission form and instructions for same.  This program is free to North American purebred owners – you only need a Ziploc bag, envelope, stamp, and mane or tail hairs with follicles attached.

International Expo Group:  As a result of the success of Upperville the Expo Group now have members around the globe to support the promotion of the CB. The USA UK NZ and Oz all have members on board. Since Upperville there has also been the successful presentation of the CB’s at Breyerfest. There are many plans afoot for promotion in 2007 and all that have the CB in their hearts are welcome to join, as help is always welcome. We have produced a new stallion book for the USA and are currently expanding it to encompass the UK as well as Oz and NZ. Action photos are wanted in all disciplines across all countries for next years booths. Please e-mail them to kt@pembridgestud.com

Lost CBs committee:  We are still busy hunting horses for the database, now expanded to include UK and Australasian-registered CB Sporthorses (partbreds), making the proposed international CB performance award easier to administer.  Currently the chair is transferring the databases to a laptop for viewing at the 2006 AGM by anyone interested in it.

PA News:  The Performance Award program is enjoying another record year for enrollments.  There have been a few hiccups due to missed deadlines, which will lead to several disqualifications.  Enrollees MUST read the program rules and are responsible for abiding by those rules.  If there are questions, contact the PR chair or the PR administrator (addresses on back cover of logbook).  Do not wait until the logbook submission deadline if you are unsure of something!

PR News:  During the second quarter, the PR Committee stayed very busy promoting and educating the public about the Cleveland Bay.  Events to date include: Upperville Colt and Horse Show, Hoosier Horse Fair, and Breyerfest.  From these events a new committee has formed which is an international committee to focus on expos. It will be working closely with all societies.  For information on expos
contact Kate Telford at kt@pembridgestud.com.  Kevin Johnson and Carolina Livi are investigating free opportunities to publish Cleveland Bay articles and information. We have advertised and had articles in a few national magazines and continue writing EJ articles.  EJ subscriptions are still available.  We have facilitated placement of Stainmore Tayberry on Breed Row at the Kentucky Horse Park.  Shelly has resigned from the committee but is serving as liaison to the membership committee. She is investigating the issues brought up at the AGM as well as the status of the electronic blue book created by a CBHSNA member and sent to the membership committee earlier this year.   For more information PR Committee activities, please visit www.ridgemor.com.

Rules and Regulations Committee:  The Rules and Regulations committee has been reading through the initial 52-page rough draft (aka “The Tome”) and trying to clarify some points.  The progress on the actual Rules document has slowed as so much of the content will be dictated by the content of the Bylaws.  In the meantime, the Rules committee is working on those areas not affected by the Bylaws.

Hot off the Presses!

The CBHS’ Annual Meeting will be held at 5pm on October 6th.  The location is Yorkshire Museum of Farming, in York.

On October 21st, Belladonna Leo will be attending a Parade of Breeds demonstration at the Hoof-N-Holler Equestrian Fair to benefit Catherine's House (a transitional facility for homeless women/children).  Time is 5pm - 8pm at Biggerstaff Park, Dallas, NC.  For more information, please see http://hoofnholler.com/ or email Laurel Watson divineequinestables@yahoo.com.  Stop by and pay them a visit if you have a chance.

DO NOT FORGET!!!  RSVPs and monies for meals during our AGM weekend are due to Faye Mulvey by November 1st.  As Faye said in the Baywatch – “No count by November 1, no free food!!  No money by November 1, no food!!”  These monies are due from non-members (for Saturday lunch) and for the Dinner Buffet on Saturday evening (all attendees).

Equine Affaire is being held November 9-12 in West Springfield, Massachusetts.  For more information, please contact: BJ Field (bjfield123@charter.net) or James Powers (power3jm@aol.com).

USDF Convention will be held November 29th – December 3rd in Kansas City, Missouri.  It would be nice to have a volunteer willing to attend and represent the Society.  Such volunteer receives a free ticket to the USDF All-Breeds Award banquet.  For more information, go to http://www.usdf.org.  To find out more about volunteering for this, please contact Gabrielle Gordon at gaby@ggzoo.net.

For those of you interested in such, the next issue of the Cleveland Bay Studbook (vol. XXXVII) will be released in October.  No mention yet of a price.

Stainmore Tayberry has taken up residence on Breed Row at Kentucky Horse Park.  This presents a prime opportunity for the public to see a real, purebred Cleveland Bay.  Kudos go to Billy and Jeannie Cave of Barter Creek Farm in North Carolina for volunteering their mare for this duty.

Several PR committee members are working to create a CBHSNA promotional video and CB footage is needed.  Please contact the PR committee if you have video or pictures for this project

Gwawr Lone Star moved back to the state of his birth in late July.  He’d been living in Montana at Andria Manecke’s farm in Cut Bank.  He tolerated the 2-1/2 day road trip very well and now lives at Beargrass Cleveland Bays in Jewett.  He continues perfecting his knot-untying and gate-opening techniques.
