Bensington Bluestone Arrives in the USA!

Bensington Bluestone, known to one and all as Tees has arrived safely in the USA.Purchased by Tracie Traver of Ridgemoor Stud to stand alongside Stainmore Wolfhound. Tees was bred by Julie Roberts of the Bensington Stud in Carmarthenshire UK His Sir is Cholderton Yobi and his Dam Bensington Peggy ex Mr Tobias.

The colt was spotted by Kate of Pembridge Stud when foal at foot when he accompanied his Dam to stud, as a result of the previous years covering. Kate earmarked him as a future performance CB  due to his presence and movement. Bought in he was then sold to Tracie to broaden her breeding programme.

His journey has temporarily ground to a halt in Maryland due to the restrictions on travel due to the EVH outbreak.in the NE. As a precautionary measure he is holed up on a stud and learning to cover to while away the time until Tracie collects him later this month.

Its an ill windas they say. The unplanned stopover has given him a head start in the USA as there is avilable to hima superbherd of mares of which he will cover a selected few before recommencing his journey! How frutrating for Tracie though. Tracie and Tally can't wait to see him and bring him home.

I am sure that we all wish Tracie and Tally every success with him and look forward to all the news and photos!

  Leslie Law Clinics

Cleveland Bay enthusiasts and others in the Mid-Atlantic area have been lucky enough to participate in several clinics with Olympic eventing gold medalist Leslie Law, and his fiance, Canadian Advanced Eventing Rider Lesley Grant, throughout 2007.  Our last series for this year will take place in October at the beautiful Plantation Valley Stables facility in Middletown, Maryland.

Law and Grant had the opportunity to view and work with a range of partbred Clevelands through the year.  Merry Fowler brought her young partbred, Vague State (by Forbes Native Statesman) to the spring series of jumping sessions, while Emily Wacker rode Bella Donna Farm's purebred mare Cholderton Circe in the summer session and plans to return this Fall.    Law and Grant were also impressed by the extremely quiet and willing attitude of another young Forbes Native Statesman son, Native Regent, as he put the green horse through his paces and over some introductory fences.  Bella Donna's Amy Hayden also brought her warmblood gelding, Teddy, as he makes his transition from dressage horse to jumping and other ventures.  Alrthough a little young for the clinics at 4 months, the 3/4-bred Cleveland colt Bella Donna Quasar impressed Law and Grant with his looks, movement and behavior as he showed off in the indoor.

Plans are in the works to continue the series for 2008.  We anticipate 3 sessions of clinics once again (each comprised of a series of 3 lessons), as well as an extended weekend intensive "Adult Day Camp" at some point during the summer. Additional information may be obtained by contacting Marcia Brody at carriages@netstorm.net.

This immediate area is also a hotbed for Cleveland Bays in the New Market-Middletown Valley hunt field.  Marilyn Webster and her Idle Hour contingent regularly bring out some of their polished and young stock, and Jennifer Sponseller Webster can be seen this season on her new mount, Idle Secret.  Craig Rockwell hunts his mare Idle Hour Petal, and Marcia Brody may be seen on a variety of partbred youngsters.

We have set the next dates for our Leslie Law
sessions in Maryland:

October 10 (Wednesday)
October 24 (Wednesday)
October 30 (Tuesday)

If you think it would be of interest, please post it
to your Cleveland Bay related lists. The clinics
will be held in Middletown, Maryland, not far from
Frederick, Maryland, and within about 40 minutes of
Leesburg, Virginia. Sessions will run in a window
between approximately 3 until 8 PM. We try to tailor
the level of the sessions to the participants' needs
and interests, as well as levels and abilities. The
fee for 3 sessions, each lasting approximately 75
minutes, is $225. Private flat lessons are also
available at $100 for a 45-minute session.

More information is available from Marcia Brody
(carriages@netstorm.net; cell 202/841-7401).

Thanks...

USEA PILOT PROGRAM
FUTURE EVENT HORSE IN-HAND CLASSES
FOR YEARLINGS, TWO- AND THREE-YEAR-OLDS

The USEA is introducing a pilot program this year intended to help breeders
and owners of future event horses to promote and market their youngstock
from yearlings to three-year-olds.

A second, and critical, feature of this program is the creation of a
database of records, results and pedigree information that will stay with
the horse for its entire life. It is intended that the USEA¹s database will
eventually feed into a centralized national sport horse database
administered by the USEF and become a valuable resource for all equestrians
as they will be able to track a horse¹s competition record in all breed and
discipline classes along with pedigree data from a yearling onwards.

Thanks to the generosity of Jim Cogdell of The Fork Stables, the USEA will
begin the roll-out of this program with a symposium and mock show on April
9-10. This symposium will focus on judging of conformation and movement of
young horses and the correct way to handle and present these youngsters to
their full advantage. This symposium will begin the educational process for
judges, exhibitors and organizers and is aimed at establishing the series as
a permanent feature on the USEA calendar.

A schedule is attached.

Botton Grove Brigand goes to Japan

Maintaining tradition to delight an emperor

A Cleveland Bay stallion bred in North Yorkshire has been exported to the Japanese Imperial Stud to help breed carriage horses for ceremonial duties with the emperor.

Botton Grove Brigand had been standing with Mrs Gilly Dimmock at Harwood Dale.

He was bred by the Tates at Botton in North Yorkshire. The seven-year-old by Masterful Jack out of Forest Friendship has arrived in Japan and will start his stud duties shortly.

The
Cleveland Bay, which is still on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust's endangered list, has been used for many years by the Japanese as a carriage horse and particularly for ceremonial duties for the Emperor of Japan.

The Japanese contacted the York-based Cleveland Bay Horse Society last year and arranged to see several stallions before selecting Brigand.

The sale is the latest in the Cleveland breeding programme in Japan which stretches back for more than 40 years.

Nigel Cowgill, of the CBHS said: "We are delighted that the confidence the Japanese Imperial Stud has in our breed continues to flourish. Cleveland Bays have been exported regularly to Japan over many years and the Japanese have identified the benefits our horses bring to upgrading their own mares.

"We are sure Brigand will excite further interest as he is an outstanding example of the breed and we look forward to seeing his offspring."

Committee updates

DNA News:   DNA will continue in 2008.  Dr. Cothran’s report will be coming out soon on the website and in the Baywatch.  If your horse has a blood sample on-file with Dr. Cothran, please be advised that those samples cannot be used in this genotyping project.  Also, having hair samples on-file with the CBHS (for registration purposes) is NOT the same thing as participating in this project.  Please remember: to submit DNA using mane or tail hairs; person submitting samples does not have to be owner but you must have the owner's permission to send it in. Send mane or tail hair in zip lock type baggies with the DNA forms to Gabrielle Gordon at 76 Corral Drive North Keller TX 76248-5009.  The submission form may be found at http://www.clevelandbay.org/health_and_research.htm  There is NO CHARGE for participation – it is being underwritten by the CBHSNA and the Society for the Preservation of the Cleveland Bay.

CB International Expo Committee News:   The International Expo group started work on 2008 booths. Work is already in hand regarding Breyerfest and Hoosier Horse Fair with plans to have a presence at Upperville. Other committee members may have plans for booths and are requested to notify the Expo group for inclusion on the events calendar.  The International Expo Committee will liaise with the CBHSNA’s new Regional Show committee whose remit is to promote CB classes at shows. Hopefully this will encourage competitiors to not only enter, but register and promote their CB.  There will be detail in the next Baywatch.  Other things ticking in the background have been possibilities regarding the World Equestrian Games in 2010 and maybe Rolex.  If you are interested in contributing funds toward any of these endeavors, please contact Kate Telford at kt@pembridgestud.com.

International CB Sporthorse Register:  Discussions are on-going with Dr. Cothran on how to ascertain (if possible) the presence of CB blood through DNA sampling.  Watch this space for further updates.

Performance Award Program News:  IThe 2007 PA year ended on November 30th and the 2008 year began on December 1st.  If you’ve not already done so, return your logbook (and any supporting documentation) to the program administrator.  Seven of the eight discipline categories “made” for 2007.  Five logbooks for the 2008 season have already been sent: dressage (1), distance (1), in-hand (1) and versatility (2).

American Livestock Breeds Conservancy held a Rare Breeds Equine Workshop following their annual meeting on November 4th in Pittsboro, North Carolina.  Laurel Watson attended with her purebred colt, Belladonna Leo.

In mid-November, Ted White reported from Louisiana:  “Carrie (Carolina Knock Out) and I just won our third straight Horse Trial at training level (with an average margin of victory of 7 points!)  Gotta love these CBs.”

2007 CBHSNA All-Breeds winners have been named!  Third-level Open division winner is Ted White (of Louisiana) with his CB Sporthorse mare, Carolina Knock Out with a score of 62.013%.  Ted and “Carrie” also won their Bronze medal this year.  In Dressage Sport Horse Breeding, 2yo colt/gelding, the winner was Laurel Watson (of North Carolina) and her purebred colt, Belladonna Leo with a score of 63.900%.  Leo is the first purebred to win a DSHB award!  Look for more information on these competitors in an upcoming issue of the Baywatch and on the CBHSNA website (www.clevelandbay.org).

It will never really be done. I hope to continue to add and improve the DVD as more things come in to me. Please send them to: Brian Neff,
113 W. School St., Grayslake, IL 60030 USA.”  This DVD of Cleveland Bays will be suitable for use at Expos.  He would like to have footage (preferred) and stills to incorporate, showing CBs being used in non-traditional and even non-competitive endeavors.  Specifically, he has recently asked for footage of CBs involved in western and distance riding.  If you have what Brian is looking for, please contact him at Bneff4848@aol.com

The following news from New Zealand was submitted by Gretel Webber.  It’s nice to hear what CBs are doing in other parts of the world, too! (Ed.)

Well everything is in full swing with both in the competition and breeding season.  Once again there are a number of lovely CB horses out there competing in various codes through out the country.  If anyone has results of CB horses that they think people should know about please send them to me, I do a lot of ferreting to find what results I can!  Remember if you are looking for a CB to purchase visit www.clevelandbays.co.nz with horses being added regularly.

Submission guidelines for CB eNews

If you’d like to submit information to CB-eNews, please send it to CB.eNews@yahoo.com.  Reports should be limited to 50-75 words (maximum).  In an effort to support people new to the breed and those out finding the “lost” CBs, Horses need not be CBHS-registered but must be on the ICBSR list.  Humans needn’t be members of any CB society.  No ads, photos, editorials, “open letters” etc will be accepted – the goal is for eNews to be apolitical and like a good sermon:  short, sweet, and to-the-point!  ENews staff will try to insure accuracy of printed information, but is not responsible for errors contained in materials submitted by others.  If you would prefer not to receive eNews, please email cb.enews@yahoo.com and type “remove” on the subject line.

Committee updates

DNA News:   DNA will continue in 2008.  We had a great year and the 2007 report, given at the CBHSNA’s annual meeting, was well-received.  Dr. Cothran’s report (along with “thank yous” to those who’ve contributed hair samples) will be coming out soon on the website and in the Baywatch.  We’ve just received three samples from the west coast to start off the 2007-2008 year. There will be CB classes, a breed display and a booth. Your help will be needed so mark your calendars! It is the first weekend in October.  Watch this space for further details.  Other things ticking in the background have been possibilities regarding the World Equestrian Games in 2010 and maybe Rolex.  If you are interested in contributing funds toward any of these endeavors, please contact Kate Telford at kt@pembridgestud.com.

Friends of the Cleveland Bay:  The “Friends” Equine Journal affiliation term closes at the end of the calendar year.  The “Friends” appreciate the efforts of those who have contributed their time, talent, and funding to make this possible.  The 2008 Equine Journal affiliation has been picked up by the CBHSNA and a formal announcement will be published in an up-coming BaywatchThe “Friends of the Cleveland Bay” continues as a viable group and one may contact us at:  friendsofthecb@yahoo.com.

International CB Sporthorse Register:  Research requests seem to come in spurts.  Currently we are working on ascertaining location of unregistered offspring for Monkton Elite and others.  Additionally, we are conducting research for potential breedings next year.  We still hear of purported CBs and are still trying to track them down.  As previously stated, we appreciate any assistance at all in locating and verifying horses believed to contain CB blood, regardless of where located.  If you are interested, like us, in knowing just how many CBs are really “out there” and have information that may help in the search, need “trial matings” research, or if you just need basic pedigree research done, please email cb.enews@yahoo.com

Performance Award Program News:  If you didn’t show or if your show year has ended, please consider returning your logbook (and any supporting documentation) early.  It would be very helpful to the program administrator to start earlier on calculating year-end scores and ordering awards.  One logbook has been returned, two more are “in the mail” and request for two 2008 logbooks have been received already.  If you are a “new member” do not forget that passport photocopies are due by December 15th or all points/mileage will be forfeit.  ALL logbooks are due to the pointskeeper by December 15th.  If there are extenuating circumstances, contact the program administrator at:  milinda@ezmailbox.net

A pleasure ride benefiting the CBHSNA was held on Sunday, October 21, 2007.  The “Jog in Natchaug” was held in Natchaug State Forest near Eastford, Connecticut.  BJ Field reports the ride was well-attended, especially for a first-time ride.  There were several Cleveland Bays, both pures and sporthorses, and all were well-behaved – even when confronting a family of bears on trail!

We still hear of purported CBs and are still trying to track them down.  As previously stated, we appreciate any assistance at all in locating and verifying horses believed to contain CB blood, regardless of where located.  If you are interested, like us, in knowing just how many CBs are really “out there” and have information that may help in the search, or if you need basic pedigree research done, please email cb.enews@yahoo.comThe ICBSR database will be available at the AGM for viewing and data input.

Performance Award Program News:  If your show season is winding down, we wish you all continued health and good luck.  If you didn’t show or if your show year has ended, please consider returning your logbook (and any supporting documentation) early.  It would be very helpful to the program administrator to start earlier on calculating year-end scores and ordering awards.

Hot off the Presses!

PA, PR, and Website committees will hold an open meeting at 7:00 pm on Oct 5th, most likely at the AGM hotel.  Send ideas and questions to the PA, PR, and website chairs in advance so we can research questions and have info ready at the meeting.

From Eileen Morgan:  On Saturday, October 7th I plan to take Moonlight (and Carl will be riding Belles) on a trail ride to benefit breast cancer patients.  The Pink Ribbon Ride benefits women in my community who face not only breast cancer, but also financial hardship. This money is used to pay for childcare so women can attend treatment sessions or appointments. It has bought food. It has paid for transportation for women who cannot get to the hospital from their homes. If you would like to sponsor Carl and I on our ride, I would be honored to accept any amount of money. 5.00, 100.00, anything at all would be appreciated. Please email me privately for my address and the name the check should be made out to if you would like to sponsor us for this ride. My email is egm1@enter.net .

ATTENTION USDF All-Breeds participants --  please check your scores because you only have until about October 6th to make changes and corrections.  Once the deadline has passed and the results are finalized, USDF will NOT change the results no matter how egregious the error.  Your All-Breeds representative will have no influence in this matter following that deadline.

A pleasure ride benefiting the CBHSNA will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2007.  The “Jog in Natchaug” will be held in Natchaug State Forest near Eastford, Connecticut.  Distances of ten (10) and fifteen (15) miles will be offered.  Registration will be held at the trailhead beginning at 9:30am.  Refreshments will be available prior to the ride and a hot meal will be supplied afterwards.  Pre-entry fees are:  $15.00 for current CBHSNA members and $20.00 for non-members.  For more information, including necessary health documentation for horses, please contact BJ Field at bjfield123@charter.net or telephone her at 860/774-5433.

The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy is hosting a Rare Breeds Equine Workshop following their annual meeting.  This will be held in Pittsboro, North Carolina on November 4th.  Laurel Watson will be in attendance representing the breed with Belladonna Leo.  Come by and show your support of the Cleveland Bay and other rare breeds.

Did you hear…?

From Brian Neff:  “It is never too late to send submissions to me for the CB Breed Compilation.
If you have what Brian is looking for, please contact him at Bneff4848@aol.com.  He plans to have a rough DVD available for viewing at the 2007 AGM in Wisconsin.

Ted White of Folsom, Louisiana wrote to say he got his USDF Bronze Medal at a show in Tomball, TX (Windy Knoll Farm) back in mid-August.  He made all his qualifying scores at 1st, 2d and 3d levels on Carolina Knock Out (PB3173).   The show at Windy Knoll Farm was only the second time they’d shown third level!  Ted states, ‘This was sort of unexpected since I got her as an event horse but "Don't look a gift horse….’  Anyway, I thought you'd like to hear another story about how wonderful CBs are.”  Congratulations on a job well done!

Cleveland Bay enthusiasts and others in the Mid-Atlantic area have been lucky enough to participate in several clinics with Olympic eventing gold medalist Leslie Law, and his fiancee, Canadian Advanced Eventing Rider Lesley Grant, throughout 2007. Although a little young for the clinics at 4 months, the 3/4-bred Cleveland colt Bella Donna Quasar impressed Law and Grant with his looks, movement and behavior as he showed off in the indoor.

Marcia Brody also reports:  “This immediate area is also a hotbed for Cleveland Bays in the New Market-Middletown Valley hunt field.  Marilyn Webster and her Idle Hour contingent regularly bring out some of their polished and young stock, and Jennifer Sponseller Webster can be seen this season on her new mount, Idle SecretCraig Rockwell hunts his mare Idle Hour Petal, and Marcia Brody may be seen on a variety of partbred youngsters.

From Shell Coburn:  “Hi all, thought that a lot of you may not have heard about the Cleveland Bay Sporthorse mare, Sarnia Park Flaunt who along with her owner/rider, Neil Ozanne in Western Australia has just been awarded the EFAWA Showjumping Horse of the Year 2007. It is a Leaderboard series over 8 shows - 2 x 1.30m, 2 x 1.35m, 4 x 1.40m. Flaunt and Neil won it by 11 points! How fabulous is that??? A CB at the top of its field!!! J  Wonderful to see.”

From Christine Neff of Illinois regarding the AEC “CB dinner” – “Well, I must say our little CB dinner on Saturday night was great fun! It was great to see Gayle [Heiring], even though she lives near by, life is SO busy that we never have an opportunity to get together. It was the first and only time I'd seen Lisa [Johnson] all weekend. I sat across from Marilyn [Webster] and her friend Michelle, who has several IdleHour offspring with a IH NightFlight baby competing Beginner Novice with her trainer that was at the other end of the table. I also got to meet Jane Karasick, I had heard of her, but never met her. And I got to sit next to Cindy [Bank] and Mary [McKeon], which was nice to see what Mary looked like without a helmet on, what a pretty girl. Dinner was a lot of fun. We all brought photos to share of our CB's and heard stories. I got to hear the story of the Webster's meeting Ram for the first time and then the mares showing up shortly after. I think the husbands of the group were a bit surprised to hear how Marilyn's Foal Alert system worked, which quickly changed to the topic of turkey timers. The Hunt Club is an old historical building that is really gorgeous! I could spend hours in there just looking at all the old fixtures, photos and antiques!

Dressage at Devon offered a Cleveland Bay class.  The following class results were provided by Michelle Douglas:  “Results were posted so I thought I would share.  Congrats to everyone!!  Carlene Kerr, Bella Donna Mahagony USDF Prospects In-Hand 70.700% 1st place; Kim Cramer, Blairs Maple Run USDF Prospects In-Hand 68.400% 2nd place; L. Hunter Wilson Cholderton Circe USDF Prospects In-Hand 68.300% 3rd place; Amy Hayden, Belladonna Quasar USDF Prospects In-Hand 67.200% 4th place; Amy Hayden, Forest Fancy Girl USDF Prospects In-Hand 67.000% 5th place; L. Hunter Wilson, Penrhyn Liberty USDF Prospects In-Hand 62.900% 6th place.

Hot off the Presses!

In an effort to support folks new to the CB breed and those with newly-found or purported CBs, CB eNews welcomes submissions from non CB-Society members, regardless of residency, and even on horses that are unregistered.    Every effort will be made to confirm that horses carry CB blood and news items may be of interest to the CB community at large.  This will hopefully increase the ability for CB owners to “network” with each other and give us an idea of just how many CBs and CB Sporthorses are really out there – especially in North America.

NCDCTA (NC Dressage Combined Training Assn.) Sport Horse Breed Show will offer a high point award to the Cleveland Bay (purebred or partbred) with the highest individual score for all classes at the breed show.  Horses must be registered with the CBHS.  The show will be held on September 3, 2007 at the Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh, NC.  This is a USEF/USDF recognized show and is a qualifying event for the USDF Breeders Championship East Coast Series.  For more information, please contact Laurel Watson at divineequinestables@yahoo.com

From Lisa Johnson of Illinois -- Jane Karasick and I would like to coordinate a dinner for the CB'ers going to compete and/or observe the American Eventing Championships in September.  We would like to coordinate a dinner at the Hunt Club in Wayne, IL just a mile down the road from Lamplight Equestrian Center.  The dinner is planned for Saturday, Sept. 15th.  [Cash] Bar opens at 6:15 -6:30 drinks and dinner will be served at 7:15.  Entrée choices are: a chicken dish for $25, or a filet and salmon combo for $36.  Dinners include salad, vegetable, potato and dessert.  Pay at the door.  **Dress is business casual, meaning khakis and a polo shirt on up. (No jeans or sneakers).  RSVP to: Lisa Johnson at 815-440-2177

Dressage at Devon will be held from September 25th through September 30th, 2007. There will definitely be a Cleveland Bay class at Dressage at Devon, as a sponsor has kindly stepped forward.  When an individual does this, they take a leap of faith that folks will actually show up for the class.  If you are able to show your horse at “DaD,” please consider this class.  If you are not bringing a horse but are able to attend, please make sure and show your support of the breed and the class sponsor.  For more information, visit http://dressageatdevon.org

PA, PR, and Website committees will hold an open meeting at 7:00 pm on Oct 5th.   Location TBA  (to be announced) but probably at or near the AGM hotel.  Send ideas and questions to the PA, PR, and website chairs in advance so we can research questions and have info ready at the meeting.

Laurel Watson will be in attendance representing the breed with Belladonna Leo and possibly Belladonna Sangria.  Come by and show your support of the Cleveland Bay and other rare breeds.

Submitted by Laurel Watson -- FYI...from the USEA website, it sounds like they are waiving the $25 fee to register horses until December for YEH program.  http://useventing.com/competitions.php?section=yeh  For 2007 only, due to the delay in announcing the new horse registration requirement, the USEA will not charge the Horse Life Registration fee of $25. Horses will still need to fill out the USEA Horse Life Registration form, but the fee will be waived. Beginning December 1, 2007, the $25 fee will be implemented. Please provide the completed HLR form to the USEA. If you have the Breed Registry papers on your horse, send a photocopy along with the USEA HLR form. Thank you all for your cooperation!

From Gabrielle Gordon -- The United States Dressage Federation (UDSF) has a huge list of horses that are not declared for a breed organization.  This might be a way for breeders and sellers to find horses they used to own or lost CBs.  I found two CBs under I and G.  It would be great to find these people to get them more active in Society activities.  This list may be seen at http://www.usdf.org/menu/allBreeddeclaredintent.asp?Letter=I

Beargrass Cleveland Bays has decided to sponsor an award to the top-scoring junior exhibitor in the CBHSNA.  In order to qualify, competitors must either hold a current “Junior” membership in their own name or be listed on a family membership.  Points are earned through exhibition of horses enrolled in the Performance Award program.  Horses must meet all eligibility criteria for the PA program, and the junior may exhibit multiple horses to earn points.  For more information, contact Milinda Ellis at milinda@ezmailbox.net or beargrass_cleveland_bays@yahoo.com

Video and Photos needed:  The CBHSNA is investigating the creation of a non-biased, professional DVD for promotional and educational purposes.  All horses and farms are welcome to participate.  If you would like to assist in this project, please submit your digital video or high resolution photos to Tracie Traver (tratraver@aol.com or (865)300-7133).

“Expo binders” are still under construction and additional information is needed.  Send any breeder information or any “horses for sale” information to Donna McDowell at donnacmac56@earthlink.net . She will be placing the pages in a normal three ring binder or they can be made available electronically.

“Action shots” are needed for CBHSNA advertising.  If you have suitable action photos of your CB, please contact Coralie Nairn at cl_chablis@hotmail.com.

Did you hear…?

Brian Neff has been working on a DVD of Cleveland Bays for use at Expos.  He would like to have footage (preferred) and stills to incorporate, showing CBs being used in non-traditional and even non-competitive endeavors.  Specifically, he has recently asked for footage of CBs involved in western and distance riding.  If you have what Brian is looking for, please contact him at Bneff4848@aol.com.  He hopes to have the DVD available at the 2007 AGM in Wisconsin.

2007 Dressage At Lexington (by Laurel Watson) -- Divine Equine Stables sponsored a Cleveland Bay High Score award at the Dressage At Lexington show which was held at the Virginia Horse Center .  Two Cleveland Bays attended:  Belladonna Leo, owned by Laurel Watson, and Cholderton Circle owned by Belladonna Farm/Hunter Wilson.  Circe won the high score award with a score of 64.15 in the Mares (Maiden or yeld) 4 years and older class.  Leo scored 61.2 in the Colt/Gelding 2 Year Old class.  There were several positive comments from spectators who gathered to watch the Cleveland Bays go.  Show management has agreed to have a Cleveland Bay IBC (individual breed class) next year, so mark your calendars!

2007 Breyerfest At Kentucky Horse Park (submitted by Laurel Watson) -- Once again members of CBHSNA were invited to partake in the demonstrations for Breyerfest at the Kentucky Horse Park .  In attendance were Rick & Michelle Bergeron with Imaten, Donna McDowell with Gracie, Tracie Traver & Tally Mock with Bensington Bluestone and BB Cody, and Laurel Watson with Belladonna Leo.  Mary McKeon and Idlehour McHenry, were also at KHP competing that weekend.  It was a great turnout for the bays.  Michelle Bergeron wrote a script describing the breed and the horses which was read during our 5 minute demos on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  The group gathered to pose for photos after the demos each day and fielded questions from spectators. There were always wonderful comments on how beautiful the horses were and comments on how folks had either never heard of a Cleveland Bay or had never seen one in person.  However, there seemed to be quite a few folks who had heard of the Cleveland Bay (whether it be from the demo or otherwise) and were very interested in their history and future.  Leo had a fan club of two 8 year old girls from Arkansas who came to see him each day while he grazed by the hunter rings.  BB Cody posed for several photos with Buffalo Bill Cody (his namesake).  Donna and Michelle were wonderful ambassadors for the breed as they rode around the park and stopped for photo ops.  People seemed to gravitate toward big, sweet Gracie with her calm disposition and welcoming eyes.  I think it’s safe to say a great time was had by all of the bays and their humans.

Laurel Watson of Divine Equine Stables in North Carolina, would like to announce the arrival of Belladonna Sangria, a pure bred filly (Knaresborough Fusilier x Penrhyn Liberty) and of FrostyOak Gretchen, a part-bred filly (Idlehour Yorktown x Anawhim (TB)) to the farm.  The fillies are settling in nicely and join Belladonna Leo (Ramblers Richard Lionheart x Kingsleys Sea Coral) a two year old purebred colt and Dexter a 1/4 CB partbred (All Eyez on Me x Eternal Pride (TB)).  Sangria and Leo will hopefully produce some lovely purebred foals in the future, but until then the Cleveland Bays will continue to be shown in hand and Dexter will be starting his under saddle career next year in some dressage shows and some local h/j shows.

2007 Too Hot To Trot Summer Breed Show I & II (by Laurel Watson) -- Old Dominion Stud sponsored a Cleveland Bay IBC at the Too Hot To Trot Summer Breed Show I & II at Morven Park Equestrian Center in Leesburg, VA.  Several Cleveland Bays were in attendance:  Belladonna Leo owned by Laurel Watson; Belladonna Pendleton, Belladonna Quasar, Forest Fancy Girl, and Cholderton Circle owned by Belladonna Farm/Hunter Wilson; and Lady Luckenbooth owned by Michelle Douglas.  The results from Saturday’s CB class (in order):  Lady Luckenbooth, Belladonna Quasar, Belladonna Pendleton, Cholderton Circe.  Belladonna Leo and Forest Fancy girl tied for fifth place.  Belladonna Leo showed in the Colt/Gelding 2 year old class with a score of 69.4.  Lady Luckenbooth showed in the Filly 2 year old class with a score of 69.3.  The results from Sunday’s CB class were (in order):  Lady Luckenbooth, Belladonna Leo.  Leo showed in the Colt/Gelding 2 year old class with a score of 63.9.  Lady Luckenbooth showed in the Filly 2 year old class with a score of 75.  There are four USDF DSHB Shows at Morven Park each summer, so mark your calendars for next year!  Thanks ODS!

From Tracie Traver -- Thank you very much for the nomination to the board of directors.  If elected, I will work very hard on behalf of the CBHSNA, its members, and most importantly, the Cleveland Bay horses.  I would be happy to have input from members regarding their ideas to make the society a more active organization.

Beargrass Cleveland Bays of Jewett, Texas would like to announce the birth of Beargrass Deadose (“Dosie”) on 17th August.  Dosie is the first foal of Beargrass Rebecca (Idlehour Hurry x Mark’s Cotton Queen (TWH) by a Paint stallion.  So far, Dosie is a red and white paint but more colors are appearing all the time.  Dosie is 1/8th CB and 1/4th Tennessee Walker.

Committee updates

CBHSNA Bylaws News:  The committee would again like to thank all the members who provided commentary on the bylaws draft.  Ballots will be sent to voting-eligible members no later than August 21, 2007.

DNA News:   Anyone planning to submit DNA samples is requested to do so by September 10th to allow accurate numbers to be included in this year's annual report.  Everyone will be thanked who are participating.  This doesn't mean program is over, but just relates to the report for 2007.  Use mane or tail hairs; person submitting samples does not have to be owner but you must have the owner's permission to send it in. Send mane or tail hair in zip lock type baggies with the DNA forms to Gabrielle Gordon at 76 Corral Drive North Keller TX 76248-5009.  The submission form may be found at www.clevelandbay.org/health_and_research.htm

CB International Expo Committee News:   No update available at this time

Friends of the Cleveland Bay:  The affiliation term will be drawing to a close soon at the end of the calendar year.  The “Friends” appreciate the efforts of those who have contributed their time, talent, and funding to make this possible.  Donations toward the 2007 affiliation and future affiliations are always appreciated.

International CB Sporthorse Register:  Folks working on this project continue to plug away in the search for lost and purported CBs.  Inquiries are promptly answered to the best of our ability, however when we respond to an inquiry with additional questions, the inquirer tends to not respond.  This is especially true when querying sellers of horses on internet sales sites.  If one chooses to purchase a horse online and one of the primary factors is that said horse is purported to be a Cleveland Bay, feel free to email Milinda to see whether this horse is even in the database or whether it has been the subject of additional inquiry.  Frequently, we hear from folks who have purchased a mare at auction with the intention of breeding said “CB” mare.  We are then asked to recommend a stallion to cross on said mare.  We WILL NOT recommend an individual stallion but where the breeding of the mare is known (or strongly suspected) we will advise when certain stallions are very-closely related.  The nature of this relationship between the horses (how closely related they are) and potential inbreeding coefficient of the resulting offspring will be disclosed to the inquirer and then of course, the decision is theirs.  For more information on this, if you are interested in knowing just how many CBs are really “out there” and have information that may help in the search, or if you need basic pedigree research done, please email cb.enews@yahoo.com.

CBHSNA Nominations for the Board of Directors:  The nominations form and instruction have been posted to the CBHSNA website http://www.clevelandbay.org/the_society.htm.  Nominations (and acceptance of same) are due by August 7, 2007.

Performance Award Program News:  No additional enrollments have been received since June 30, 2007.  Program enrollees are asked to submit any comments and suggestions about the program and its rules prior to August 15th this year (to allow the committee to address these, work out any necessary rules changes, address everything at the AGM, and have rules in place prior to start of the 2007/2008 competition year).    This date has been moved up due to scheduling of the AGM.

Website News:   The website committee would like to include all CBHSNA-member farms on the website.  Please send your information to Tracie Traver for posting to tratraver@aol.com.  The web committee is continues requesting input on content and appearance.  Please email or call Tracie Traver, Committee Chair, with any suggestions at tratraver@aol.com or (865)300-7133).  The new Society email address: info@clevelandbay.org is available for seekers of general information regarding the breed and the North American society.

From Laurel Watson -- Old Dominion Stud has sponsored a Cleveland Bay IBC (individual breed class) at the Too Hot To Trot I & II Breed Shows at Morven Park on 8/4 and 8/5. Although there is now a late fee because the entry deadline has passed, they will still accept entries. The info is on the CB website. This class will be later in the afternoon.

From Laurel Watson -- The official class list has been posted for the NCDCTA Sport Horse Breed Show at http://www.cdi-raleigh.com/breed_show.htm.  Closing date for entries is Aug. 10. Hope to see some folks there.

**Dress is business casual, meaning Kakis and a polo shirt on up.

[PARAPHRASED AND EDITED FOR LENGTH] -- From the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and American Horse Council (AHC) – Next week, the US House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on the 2008 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration Appropriations bill (H.R. 3161), which would fund the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for Fiscal Year 2008. Section 738 of that bill would …eliminate funding necessary for USDA to operate quarantine facilities and to pay personnel to approve and facilitate the import and export of horses for exhibition, competition, sale or breeding. Before you export, import, sell or try to travel across the border, be sure and check the current regulations for doing so. There may have been recent, dramatic changes in policy and procedure!

In late June, Legacy Laurie (Winston) and owner, Lisa Johnson, headed to their first recognized event of the year. This is the start of Winston's second year of competing. Last autumn’s 1st place win at Silverwood made him eligible for this years AEC (American Eventing Championships). This 2nd place win again makes him eligible. I'm hoping Winston will be one of many representing the CB at this years AEC in September.

From Anna Cohen -- We are pleased to announce that we are welcoming a new fellow to ODS. Darren King Alfred will be our outcross stallion here at ODS. He is by Braithwaite Ambassador and out of Darren Queen Charlotte.

The Voice of the Horse 2007 (a project at Tapestry Institute, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization)  will be broadcast via the Internet through August 31, 2007.  More information may be found at http://www.thevoiceofthehorse.com.  The cost is $35.

CBHSNA Bylaws News:  By now, all current voting-eligible CBHSNA members should have received the draft of the proposed Bylaws.  The committee has requested that members read this draft carefully and comment on same.  If the draft appears fine then please say so.  If not, please say so and elaborate on any problem areas you see.  Frequently, members complain that their voices are not heard.  This is an opportunity to be heard but if members choose not to comment, they really have no right to complain later on.  Comments must be received by the Bylaws committee by 10 July 2007.  Ballots will be sent to voting-eligible members no later than August 21, 2007.  If you have misplaced contact information for providing feedback to the committee, please send an email to cb.enews@yahoo.com.   If you have tried to fax your comments, please be advised that lightning hit that telephone line, literally cooking parts of it and effectively killing the fax machine.  That fax machine has now been replaced and the phone line has been re-wired.  So, if you tried to fax your comments but were unable to do so, please try again!

DNA News:   More DNA is always needed for the DNA genotype program.  It is free and available
to
ALL North American purebred owners.  Here is a short quote from Dr. Cothran explaining the program:   "As to the benefits of the CB it is that this study gives information about the genetic diversity within the breed which can help in making decisions related to future conservation of the breed."  Send mane or tail hair in zip lock type baggies with the DNA forms to Gabrielle Gordon at 76 Corral Drive North Keller TX 76248-5009.  The submission form may be found at http://www.clevelandbay.org/health_and_research.htm

CB International Expo Committee News:   Committee members converged on Upperville and report having a good time.  Plans are already afoot to have a CB information booth at the show next year.  The expo group continues to work on the photo contest project.  If you are interested in assisting with this, including nominating someone to serve as a “photo Judge”, please contact Kate Telford (kt@pembridgestud.com).  The expo group continues brainstorming for ways to have a CB presence at the 2010 World Equestrian Games to be held at Kentucky Horse Park.

Friends of the Cleveland Bay:  A group of investors has combined forces to affiliate again with Equine Journal.   We continue to run articles each month in response to reader feedback received in 2006.  The CBHSNA is not involved in the current affiliation.  If you would like to receive the free Equine Journal subscription or show your support of our efforts in another way, please contact the “Friends” at friendsofthecb@yahoo.com.  Donations toward the 2007 affiliation and future affiliations are always appreciated.

International CB Sporthorse Register:  Several folks continue to research and record “lost CBs” worldwide.  We are trying to ascertain the identity of some purebreds now residing in France and very recently heard of a partbred  mare that has gone to Italy.  Additionally, a pure stallion should be en-route to Japan soon.  One of the many tasks we are trying to accomplish is getting an accurate head count of CBs and CB sporthorses.  This task has been partially completed but we have trouble learning of births and deaths each year – which is critical for accuracy.  If you are interested in knowing just how many CBs are really “out there” and have information that may help, please email cb.enews@yahoo.com.

CBHSNA Nominations for the Board of Directors:  The nominations form and instruction have been posted to the CBHSNA website http://www.clevelandbay.org/the_society.htm

Performance Award Program News:  As of June 30, 2007, forty-five (49) logbooks have been mailed with two more waiting to be mailed, pending receipt of information from the owners.   The enrollment deadline for the CBHSNA’s performance awards program is August 1st.  Additionally, if you are enrolled and have not yet sent in the photocopy of your horse passport, you need to do so soon.  Constructive criticism of the program rules needs to be received by August 15th this year (to allow the committee to address these, work out any necessary rules changes, address everything at the AGM, and have rules in place prior to start of the 2007/2008 competition year).

Pembridge Stud is pleased to announce that they have shipped semen from Pembridge Midshipman to Italy.  As far as is knows, this is the first time CB semen has been shipped to that country.  The “lucky lady” to be bred is a half-bred CB mare and quite possibly the first CB pure- or part-bred to go to Italy.  Keep your fingers crossed that all will go well and that CB influence will spread to that country as well!_,_._,___

Committee updates

DNA News:   More DNA is always needed for the DNA genotype program.  It is free and available
to ALL North American purebred owners.  Here is a short quote from Dr. Cothran explaining the program:   "As to the benefits of the CB it is that this study gives information about the genetic diversity within the breed which can help in making decisions related to future conservation of the breed."  Send mane or tail hair in zip lock type baggies with the DNA forms to Gabrielle Gordon at
76 Corral Drive North Keller TX 76248-5009.  The submission form may be found at http://www.clevelandbay.org/health_and_research.htm

CB International Expo Committee News:   Committee members are en-route to Upperville.  There will not be a booth this year but there will be folks available to answer questions about the breed, registrations, etc.  .There will be several Cleveland Bays showing, too so if you will be in the area, swing by and show your support for your  favorite breed!

International CB Sporthorse Register:  We continue to hear of “lost” or purported CBs and receive requests for information on how to register these horses.  We also continue to monitor online horse sales.  When an ad is discovered and the horse is listed as a Cleveland Bay, we inquire as to the breeding (which is usually not listed).  Likewise, when a horse has parents listed from another breed but the sales horse is listed as a Cleveland Bay, we try to notify the seller about the error.  So far, these sellers have been very cooperative and in many cases, did not realize that the Cleveland Bay is a distinct breed instead of a type or a “color breed.”  Because of this, we use this as an opportunity to inform them about the breed.

CBHSNA Nominations for the Board of Directors:  The nominations form and instruction have been posted to the CBHSNA website http://www.clevelandbay.org/the_society.htm

Performance Award Program News:  As of May 31, 2007, forty-five (45) logbooks have been mailed with two more waiting to be mailed, pending receipt of information from the owners.   Additionally, there have been inquiries from several more [new] CBHSNA members about enrolling in the program.

Publicity News:   Look for new CBHSNA ads in Horse Illustrated and Carriage Driving World in the next few months.  There will also be an upcoming article on the Cleveland Bay Horse in Equine Journal, courtesy of Equine Survival Trust.

New Events Added

Plantation Field in Unionville, Pennsylvania has recently added a Young Event Horse division to their schedule for their event on June 9, so if you're in the Area and considering taking part in the Series, it will be a great starter event for your youngster!

Colorado Horse Park (CO), Indiana Horse Trials (IN), Waredaca (MD), and Hill 'N' Hound Horse Trials (IL) have all signed up to host YEH events in June, and with more events across the country considering adding the YEH Series classes to their events, more events will be added to the calendar, so stay tuned!
-------------------

Dressage at Devon will be held from September 25th through September 30th, 2007. There will definitely be a Cleveland Bay class at Dressage at Devon, as a sponsor has kindly stepped forward.  When an individual does this, they take a leap of faith that folks will actually show up for the class.  If you are able to show your horse at DaD, please consider this class.  If you are not bringing a horse but are able to attend, please make sure and show your support of the breed and the class sponsor.  For more information, visit http://dressageatdevon.org

2007 SPARKS datasheets are available.  Datasheets to individual mare owners were recently sent to North American mare owners.  If you own a pure mare and are located in North America but did not receive your datasheet(s), contact BJ Field at bjfield123@charter.net.  If you’d like the entire SPARKS CD, you may purchase one from the CBHS office.  The current price of the disc is £20.00 +p&p.  If you have (and return) your old disc, the cost is only £10.00 +p&p.   Contact the CBHS office for more information.

The DNA committee would like to publish the names of and publicly thank those participating in Dr. Cothran’s genotyping study.  This information would be published in the Baywatch.  If you do not want your name listed, please email Gabrielle at gallianowilful@yahoo.com

The Cleveland Bay Studbook (vol. XXXVII) was released in October.  The price is £15.00 for a “paperback” copy.  For more information, please contact the CBHS office.
