Bensington Bluestone Arrives in the USA!
Bensington Bluestone, known to one and all as Tees has arrived safely in the USA.Purchased by Tracie Traver of Ridgemoor Stud to stand alongside Stainmore Wolfhound. Tees was bred by Julie Roberts of the Bensington Stud in Carmarthenshire UK His Sir is Cholderton Yobi and his Dam Bensington Peggy ex Mr Tobias.
The colt was spotted by Kate of Pembridge Stud when foal at foot when he accompanied his Dam to stud, as a result of the previous years covering. Kate earmarked him as a future performance CB due to his presence and movement. Bought in he was then sold to Tracie to broaden her breeding programme.
His journey has temporarily ground to a halt in Maryland due to the restrictions on travel due to the EVH outbreak.in the NE. As a precautionary measure he is holed up on a stud and learning to cover to while away the time until Tracie collects him later this month.
Its an ill windas they say. The unplanned stopover has given him a head start in the USA as there is avilable to hima superbherd of mares of which he will cover a selected few before recommencing his journey! How frutrating for Tracie though. Tracie and Tally can't wait to see him and bring him home.
I am sure that we all wish Tracie and Tally every success with him and look forward to all the news and photos!

USEA PILOT PROGRAM
FUTURE EVENT HORSE IN-HAND CLASSES
FOR YEARLINGS, TWO- AND THREE-YEAR-OLDS
The USEA is introducing a pilot program this year intended to help breeders
and owners of future event horses to promote and market their youngstock
from yearlings to three-year-olds.
A second, and critical, feature of this program is the creation of a
database of records, results and pedigree information that will stay with
the horse for its entire life. It is intended that the USEA¹s database will
eventually feed into a centralized national sport horse database
administered by the USEF and become a valuable resource for all equestrians
as they will be able to track a horse¹s competition record in all breed and
discipline classes along with pedigree data from a yearling onwards.
Thanks to the generosity of Jim Cogdell of The Fork Stables, the USEA will
begin the roll-out of this program with a symposium and mock show on April
9-10. This symposium will focus on judging of conformation and movement of
young horses and the correct way to handle and present these youngsters to
their full advantage. This symposium will begin the educational process for
judges, exhibitors and organizers and is aimed at establishing the series as
a permanent feature on the USEA calendar.
A schedule is attached.

Botton Grove Brigand goes to Japan

Maintaining tradition to delight an emperor
A
Cleveland Bay stallion bred in
North Yorkshire
has been exported to the Japanese Imperial Stud to help breed carriage horses
for ceremonial duties with the emperor.
Botton Grove Brigand had been standing with Mrs Gilly Dimmock at Harwood Dale.
He was bred by the Tates at Botton in North Yorkshire. The seven-year-old by
Masterful Jack out of Forest Friendship has arrived in Japan and will start his
stud duties shortly.
The
Cleveland
Bay, which is still on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust's endangered list, has
been used for many years by the Japanese as a carriage horse and particularly
for ceremonial duties for the Emperor of Japan.
The Japanese contacted the York-based Cleveland Bay Horse Society last year and
arranged to see several stallions before selecting Brigand.
The sale is the latest in the Cleveland breeding programme in Japan which
stretches back for more than 40 years.
Nigel Cowgill, of the CBHS said: "We are delighted that the confidence the
Japanese Imperial Stud has in our breed continues to flourish. Cleveland Bays
have been exported regularly to Japan over many years and the Japanese have
identified the benefits our horses bring to upgrading their own mares.
"We are sure Brigand will excite further interest as he is an outstanding
example of the breed and we look forward to seeing his offspring."

DNA News: DNA will continue in 2008. Dr. Cothran’s report will be coming out soon on the website and in the Baywatch. If your horse has a blood sample on-file with Dr. Cothran, please be advised that those samples cannot be used in this genotyping project. Also, having hair samples on-file with the CBHS (for registration purposes) is NOT the same thing as participating in this project. Please remember: to submit DNA using mane or tail hairs; person submitting samples does not have to be owner but you must have the owner's permission to send it in. Send mane or tail hair in zip lock type baggies with the DNA forms to Gabrielle Gordon at 76 Corral Drive North Keller TX 76248-5009. The submission form may be found at http://www.clevelandbay.org/health_and_research.htm There is NO CHARGE for participation – it is being underwritten by the CBHSNA and the Society for the Preservation of the Cleveland Bay.
CB International Expo Committee News: The International Expo group started work on 2008 booths. Work is already in hand regarding Breyerfest and Hoosier Horse Fair with plans to have a presence at Upperville. Other committee members may have plans for booths and are requested to notify the Expo group for inclusion on the events calendar. The International Expo Committee will liaise with the CBHSNA’s new Regional Show committee whose remit is to promote CB classes at shows. Hopefully this will encourage competitiors to not only enter, but register and promote their CB. There will be detail in the next Baywatch. Other things ticking in the background have been possibilities regarding the World Equestrian Games in 2010 and maybe Rolex. If you are interested in contributing funds toward any of these endeavors, please contact Kate Telford at kt@pembridgestud.com.
International CB Sporthorse Register: Discussions are on-going with Dr. Cothran on how to ascertain (if possible) the presence of CB blood through DNA sampling. Watch this space for further updates.
Performance Award Program News: IThe 2007 PA year ended on November 30th and the 2008 year began on December 1st. If you’ve not already done so, return your logbook (and any supporting documentation) to the program administrator. Seven of the eight discipline categories “made” for 2007. Five logbooks for the 2008 season have already been sent: dressage (1), distance (1), in-hand (1) and versatility (2).

The CBHSNA now accepts payment for new memberships, renewals, Performance Award program enrollments, merchandise, and sale horse ads with PayPal. No need to mail a check, make your payment instantaneously through PayPal. If you are paying for a membership and/or PA enrollment, please be sure to ALSO SEND the membership and enrollment forms. Instructions are on the CBHSNA website: www.clevelandbay.org
Several Cleveland Bay enthusiasts participated in clinics with Olympic eventing gold medalist Leslie Law, and his fiancee, Canadian Advanced eventing rider Lesley Grant. Plans are in the works to continue the series for 2008 with three sessions being anticipated along with an extended weekend intensive "Adult Day Camp" at some point during the summer. Additional information may be obtained by contacting Marcia Brody at carriages@netstorm.net.

Did you hear…?
American Livestock Breeds Conservancy held a Rare Breeds Equine Workshop following their annual meeting on November 4th in Pittsboro, North Carolina. Laurel Watson attended with her purebred colt, Belladonna Leo.
In mid-November, Ted White reported from Louisiana: “Carrie (Carolina Knock Out) and I just won our third straight Horse Trial at training level (with an average margin of victory of 7 points!) Gotta love these CBs.”
2007 CBHSNA All-Breeds winners have been named! Third-level Open division winner is Ted White (of Louisiana) with his CB Sporthorse mare, Carolina Knock Out with a score of 62.013%. Ted and “Carrie” also won their Bronze medal this year. In Dressage Sport Horse Breeding, 2yo colt/gelding, the winner was Laurel Watson (of North Carolina) and her purebred colt, Belladonna Leo with a score of 63.900%. Leo is the first purebred to win a DSHB award! Look for more information on these competitors in an upcoming issue of the Baywatch and on the CBHSNA website (www.clevelandbay.org).
From Brian Neff: “It is never too late to send
submissions to me for the CB Breed Compilation.
It will never really be done. I hope to continue to add and improve the DVD as
more things come in to me. Please send them to: Brian Neff,
113 W. School
St., Grayslake, IL 60030 USA.” This DVD of Cleveland Bays will be suitable for
use at Expos. He would like to have footage (preferred) and stills to
incorporate, showing CBs being used in non-traditional and even non-competitive
endeavors. Specifically, he has recently asked for footage of CBs involved in
western and distance riding. If you have what Brian is looking for, please
contact him at
Bneff4848@aol.com.
The following news from New Zealand was submitted by Gretel Webber. It’s nice to hear what CBs are doing in other parts of the world, too! (Ed.)
Well everything is in full swing with both in the competition and breeding season. Once again there are a number of lovely CB horses out there competing in various codes through out the country. If anyone has results of CB horses that they think people should know about please send them to me, I do a lot of ferreting to find what results I can! Remember if you are looking for a CB to purchase visit www.clevelandbays.co.nz with horses being added regularly.

DNA News: DNA will continue in 2008. We had a great year and the 2007 report, given at the CBHSNA’s annual meeting, was well-received. Dr. Cothran’s report (along with “thank yous” to those who’ve contributed hair samples) will be coming out soon on the website and in the Baywatch. We’ve just received three samples from the west coast to start off the 2007-2008 year.

Hopefully this will encourage competitiors to not only enter, but register and promote their CB. There will be detail in the next Baywatch The next AGM will be at the Kentucky Horse Park, combined with the Equine Survival Trust show. There will be CB classes, a breed display and a booth. Your help will be needed so mark your calendars! It is the first weekend in October. Watch this space for further details. Other things ticking in the background have been possibilities regarding the World Equestrian Games in 2010 and maybe Rolex. If you are interested in contributing funds toward any of these endeavors, please contact Kate Telford at kt@pembridgestud.com.
Friends of the Cleveland Bay: The “Friends” Equine Journal affiliation term closes at the end of the calendar year. The “Friends” appreciate the efforts of those who have contributed their time, talent, and funding to make this possible. The 2008 Equine Journal affiliation has been picked up by the CBHSNA and a formal announcement will be published in an up-coming Baywatch. The “Friends of the Cleveland Bay” continues as a viable group and one may contact us at: friendsofthecb@yahoo.com.
International CB Sporthorse Register: Research requests seem to come in spurts. Currently we are working on ascertaining location of unregistered offspring for Monkton Elite and others. Additionally, we are conducting research for potential breedings next year. We still hear of purported CBs and are still trying to track them down. As previously stated, we appreciate any assistance at all in locating and verifying horses believed to contain CB blood, regardless of where located. If you are interested, like us, in knowing just how many CBs are really “out there” and have information that may help in the search, need “trial matings” research, or if you just need basic pedigree research done, please email cb.enews@yahoo.com.
Performance Award Program News: If you didn’t show or if your show year has ended, please consider returning your logbook (and any supporting documentation) early. It would be very helpful to the program administrator to start earlier on calculating year-end scores and ordering awards. One logbook has been returned, two more are “in the mail” and request for two 2008 logbooks have been received already. If you are a “new member” do not forget that passport photocopies are due by December 15th or all points/mileage will be forfeit. ALL logbooks are due to the pointskeeper by December 15th. If there are extenuating circumstances, contact the program administrator at: milinda@ezmailbox.net

The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy is hosting a Rare Breeds Equine Workshop following their annual meeting. This will be held in Pittsboro, North Carolina on November 4th. Laurel Watson will be in attendance representing the breed with Belladonna Leo. Come by and show your support of the Cleveland Bay and other rare breeds.
Several Cleveland Bay enthusiasts have been lucky enough to participate in several clinics with Olympic eventing gold medalist Leslie Law, and his fiancee, Canadian Advanced Eventing Rider Lesley Grant, throughout 2007. Plans are in the works to continue the series for 2008. We anticipate 3 sessions of clinics once again (each comprised of a series of 3 lessons), as well as an extended weekend intensive "Adult Day Camp" at some point during the summer. Additional information may be obtained by contacting Marcia Brody at carriages@netstorm.net.

PA, PR, and Website committees held an open meeting on Oct 5, 2007 at the AGM hotel. The meeting was well-attended with much brainstorming. If you were unable to attend, but submitted questions or comments and have not already heard back, please contact the appropriate committee chair for an update.
A pleasure ride benefiting the CBHSNA was held on Sunday, October 21, 2007. The “Jog in Natchaug” was held in Natchaug State Forest near Eastford, Connecticut. BJ Field reports the ride was well-attended, especially for a first-time ride. There were several Cleveland Bays, both pures and sporthorses, and all were well-behaved – even when confronting a family of bears on trail!
